Video consultations for insomnia
Insomnia is a condition that works well by video, because the diagnosis rests on history taking and a sleep diary. How to book, how to prepare, and the limits of this format.

Key points
- Insomnia suits remote consultation better than most conditions: the diagnosis comes from history taking and a sleep diary, both of which work over video.
- CBT-I is already a course of discussion and weekly exercises. Delivering it by video does not reduce its content.
- ⛔ Genuine limits: a video consultation cannot perform a physical examination, cannot measure anything during sleep, and does not replace emergency care.
- A video consultation is still a medical consultation: it needs enough time, enough privacy and a stable connection. It is not a text exchange.
Who this is for
- You live far from Quang Tri but want to see a specialist.
- Your working hours do not allow daytime appointments.
- You are part way through a behavioural programme and need a short weekly review.
- You are a Vietnamese national abroad, or a foreign resident in Vietnam.
- You would rather not attend a psychiatric facility in person. That barrier is real, and it keeps people waiting for years.
Why this condition works over video
For many conditions, a remote consultation is the lesser option because palpation, auscultation and percussion are missing. Insomnia is different. There is no physical sign that confirms it, and international guidelines explicitly advise against routine sleep studies to diagnose ordinary insomnia. What settles the diagnosis is a careful history and two weeks of a sleep diary, and neither loses anything on screen.
This matters for people who live at a distance. The clinic is in Quang Tri, but most people searching about insomnia in Vietnam are not. Remote consultation is how a specialist can reach them, and for this condition it is not a second-class option.
When a video consultation is not the right choice
- Suspected sleep apnoea, which needs measurement during sleep at a facility with the equipment.
- Unusual behaviour during sleep such as kicking, hitting, shouting or acting out dreams.
- Excessive daytime sleepiness with episodes of muscle weakness during emotion.
- New neurological symptoms: weakness, slurred speech, double vision.
- An acute situation - see the warning below.
How to make the appointment worth it
- Find somewhere private and quiet. You will be talking about things you would not want overheard.
- Have the names and doses of everything you take, including supplements and herbal teas.
- Write down your questions beforehand. It is very easy to forget them once the consultation starts.
- If you share a bed, ask your partner whether you snore, stop breathing, or move your legs a lot.
- If you have kept a sleep diary, photograph it and send it before the appointment.
How it works
- Book
Choose a time through the booking form or by Zalo message. You receive a confirmation with preparation instructions.
- Prepare
Keep a sleep diary for a few days if there is time, photograph your current medication list, and gather any recent test results.
- The consultation
The first appointment is longer, because history taking and ruling out other sleep disorders both take time.
- Plan and materials
After the consultation you receive a summary of the plan and a sleep diary template to complete before the next review.
- Follow-up
Behavioural treatment is measured in weeks. Review appointments are shorter and focus on the diary data.
Frequently asked questions
- Can medication be prescribed in a video consultation?
- Prescribing depends on the clinical assessment and on current regulations covering electronic prescriptions, which must be submitted to the national prescription system. For chronic insomnia, the first-line approach is not medication in any case.
- I live outside Vietnam. Can I be seen?
- Yes, provided the time difference can be arranged. Please say which country you are in when booking: it affects the appointment time and, if the plan involves medication, which products are available where you live.
- How long does the appointment take?
- The first appointment is longer because of the history taking and the ruling out. Review appointments are considerably shorter.
